Saint Elizabeth Parish Safety And Security Committee Launched – Vincent Samuels

In explaining to Councillors of the Saint Elizabeth Parish Council, Technocrats from the Ministry of Local Government and National Security and representatives from Community Based Organizations (CBO’s) and other Stakeholders and Public Interest Groups the purpose of Saint Elizabeth Parish Safety and Security Committee, His Worship the Mayor of Black River and Chairman Saint Elizabeth Parish Council Councillor Everton Fisher said in his welcome and opening remarks that the committee was established with the vision of improving the safety and security of the citizenry in Saint Elizabeth.

Continuing to explain the purpose of the committee, Mayor Fisher said that the vision of the committee also aligns with the national vision which it has adopted and reads: Saint Elizabeth is the place to work, play, and do business. “Often times, safety and security is left on the back burner until a crisis happens; but do not be fooled”, Mayor Fisher said, “in thinking that Jamaica is shielded from becoming vulnerable to acts of terrorism, biological warfare, bombings, or any other major safety issues affecting the world.”

Stating emphatically to the audience that “we are all at risk,” Mayor Fisher said that the establishment of Saint Elizabeth Parish Safety and Security Committee could not have happened at a more opportune time. Emphasizing that that there must be a renewed focus on safety and security, and that it has to start right here and that safety and security must take precedence at the Saint Elizabeth Parish Council, Mayor Fisher said “if this is dine, it can be translated to our schools, churches, businesses, our communities, and our homes.”

Concluding his welcome and opening remarks, Mayor Fisher said “Saint Elizabeth Parish Safety and Security Committee is established to ensure effective management and overall safety of the citizens in our parish and must conform to our national safety and security standards. The committee will strive to reduce citizens’ safety risk through public education, campaigns, simulations, and response planning, disaster risk reduction, and encourage safe community designs.” “Overall”, Mayor Fisher elaborated, we have to create active citizen response, improve resilience of our people and strengthen and offer training where possible.”

Origin Of Saint Elizabeth Parish Safety and Security Committee
Saint Elizabeth Parish Safety and Security Committee has its genesis in the idea that Ms. Delzita Taylor, Superintendent of Police and Divisional Commander Jamaica Constabulary Force, Black River, gave to the Saint Elizabeth Parish Council after she observed that safety and security did not appear in the listing of committees that met at the Saint Elizabeth Parish Council.
In essence, Saint Elizabeth Parish safety and Security Committee is the brain child of Superintendent Delzita Taylor – a Saint Elizabethan by birth.
