South Coast Rest Stop An Innovation By A Beersheba Primary School Alumus By Vincent Samuels

Kenrick Morgan, 56 year old Beersheba Primary School Alumus, a native of Carr District, New Market, Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica West Indies, is of the view that notwithstanding the destruction that the Mother Of All Floods in 1979 did to Old New Market Square that resulted in Urban Development

Corporation (UDC) and other Jamaica Government Ministries and Agencies relocating the Business community to Lewisville, like her sister Joan Morgan who owns and operates a Hardware and Farm supply store in the old Business Community, contend that “dem nable string plant inna Old New Market Square” and their love, altruism, and patriotism for the old Business Community will not allow them to vacate and walk away from the area that is subliminally entrenched in their consciousness.

Instead of walking away from Old New Market square Business Community, Kenrick, a graduate of Jamaica School of Agriculture (JSA) who worked with the Ministry of Agriculture for 13 years before deciding to quit his job to become a Self-made Business Entrepreneur, decided to capitalize on numerous JUTA Coaster Buses that transported Tourists from Montego Bay to YS Falls, Appleton Rum Tour, and Lovers Leap Tourist Attractions in Saint Elizabeth daily.

HOW SOUTH COAST REST STOP WAS CONCEIVED

Searching his mind for an idea with respect to goods and service that he could offer in niche marketing that would entice Tourists to stop in Old New Market square instead of just driving through the Old Business Community that was fast becoming a ghost village since businesses were evacuated and relocated to Lewisville, Kenrick came up with South Coast Rest Stop as an innovative idea that would offer specialty goods and services consisting of the following:

1.  Seven state of the art rest rooms facility where visitors can stop and ease

themselves and freshen up Monday through Saturday before continuing

their journey.

2. Wide variety of Jamaican fruits and vegetables.

3.  Carving and straw-work done by people from the area – like Kenston “Riley”

Smith and his wife Madge who are involved in Cottage Industry.

4. Security provided by New Market Police.

5.  Bar service featuring Appleton Rum, JB Rum, Jamaican Liqueurs and

Appetizers, and natural roots drink.

Old Hits Party on the last Sunday in each month from 12 noon – 2:00 a.m., featuring vintage music from the 1950’s  to 1960’s provided by Black Scorpion Disco from “Rocks Hall”, Flint Valley, Saint Elizabeth. “State of the Art Computerized Black Scorpion is owed by successful village business entrepreneur Eugenie “Cherry” Farquharson, Beersheba Primary Alumna”.  Specialty Finger Licking Mouth watering foods offered by Kenrick include fish and bammy, curry goat and manish water.

KENRICK’S ZEAL AND DESIRE TO GIVE BACK TO OLD NEW MARKET BUSINESS COMMUNITY.

Speaking to the writer of this article about his zeal and desire to give back to Old  New Market Square Business Community that nurtured him, Kenrick mentioned his altruism and patriotism to recreate, reinvent, and develop the ambience of the lot of land in front of the old Police Station adjoining New Market main road. Towards this end, Kenrick has de-bushed and cleared the lot of land of tall shrubs, bush, and weeds – exposing a white discoloured rectangular monument that was concealed in the thick overgrowth.

This monument was mounted and installed years ago when Jamaica became an Independent Nation. Kenrick has indicated his willingness to renovate and maintain the monument. In addition, Kenrick has utilized his own money to acquire and install several lengths of galvanized pipes which he will mount on the premises as flag poles on which flags from several countries in the world will fly in the crisp New Market wind.

Congratulations Kenrick for revitalizing Old New Market Square. I love what I am seeing in photos. Keep expanding, and continue to be an inspiration to all in the area. Hopefully others will follow in your footstep to build up the square and make it be the “MUST SEE TOURIST STOP” in St. Elizabeth. shamilton
