ORIGIN OF THE SURNAME WARBURTON

The interesting and outstanding surname Warburton, is of Anglo-Saxon origin and it is a locational name from either of two places called Warburton:

  1. Near Altrincham in Cheshire, United Kingdom
  2. Denby dale, urban district in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

Locational surnames were originally given to local landowners and to the lord of the manor and especially to those former inhabitants who left their places of origin to live and work in another area or country.

Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to “develop” often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling; thus Warberton ended up as Warburton.

How did the surname Warburton turn up in Carr District, New Market, Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica West Indies?

Credible research has disclosed the names of two slave boys that first appeared with the surname Warburton  in Jamaica, West Indies. They are:

  1. Richard Warburton, age 2, a mulatto in the year 1829
  2. Edward Warburton, age 2 ½ years, a quadroon in 1872

These two boys were described as mulatto and creole.

QUESTION: Did these two boys just take the name from the Slave Owner or were they children of the Slave Owner by virtue of their ethnicity? For answers to this question, direct family members of Lebert Warburton, deceased; are urged to acquire, research and read the following two books:
