Objective
The objective of BOSA Newsletter is to inform and educate the people in Beersheba School Community and all Beersheba Primary School Alumni in Jamaica and the Diaspora by means of clean and wholesome news. In doing so, the Newsletter will continue to highlight and celebrate their achievements, mourn their losses, defend their rights and articulate their needs. With meticulous calculated professional news reporting, the Newsletter will ceaselessly expose the entrenched culture of silence, secrecy, non-response and pussy-footing that has characterized the unscrupulous tyrannical oligarchy rule that is tarnished with nepotism that is designed to frustrate Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) as it continues to work assiduously as the safety net and mentor for voiceless and vulnerable students who reside in the impoverished peasant farming Beersheba Primary School Community from falling through the cracks cognizant of the fact, that had it not been for intervention from the Association, these students would be left alone to fend for themselves contrary to the vision of James “Dick” Richards, Beersheba Primary School Alumnus, Soldier, Self-made Businessman, Philanthropist and Icon.

In keeping with the decision of Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) to support a paperless friendly environment and go green, effective from Volume 16 of its newsletter, the Association will no longer list in its newsletter the names of Beersheba Primary School Alumni that have passed on.

All residents in your native Flint Valley District, New Market, saint Elizabeth and Beersheba Primary School Alumni in Jamaica and the Diaspora are proud of you Shanisa and we all BIG YOU UP and encourage you to KEEP ON KEEPING ON and NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER GIVE UP! NEVER GIVE UP!

Meet Sameika Maitland and BOSA Adopted Achiever and Trailblazer

Sameika Maitland who is currently Form 1 Grade 7-24 student at Hampton School, Malvern, Saint Elizabeth has been adopted and is being assisted and monitored by Beersheba Old Student Association (BOSA).

Sameika Maitland, daughter of Juliette Mullings, an Alumnus of Beersheba Primary School, graduated from New Roads All Age School, Westmoreland, Jamaica West Indies where she was successful in passing the Grade Six Achievement Text (GSAT) with a grade of 92.7%. The Ministry of Education placed Sameika at Hampton School on the basis of her excellent performance in the GSAT Exam.

When news reached BOSA Secretary/Treasurer that Sameika’s mother was in the process of removing Sameika from Hampton School because she could not afford to pay her daughter’s Boarding and Tuition Fees, the Secretary/Treasurer stopped the transfer process and initiated action that resulted in Sameika being admitted to Hampton School where she began classes on September 3, 2014.

Decision taken at this meeting at which four (4) additional items that were used as terms of reference for this meeting, is that the Administration at Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) will take appropriate action to contact Stephen Curran, Network Design Director at Digicel Group, Kingston, Jamaica West Indies regarding his interest that he has indicated to Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) to provide Wireless Broadband Internet Service to the school notwithstanding the fact that his knowledge of the terrain in the area could be challenging to provide service to the school.

Resolution To Rename Beersheba Primary School James Richards Primary School
As a result of the above subject matter being thoroughly discussed with the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education in a meeting that was held at the Ministry’s Head Office in Kingston, Jamaica west Indies on March 13, 2013, and the matter being given full support by the Saint Elizabeth Parish Council, Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) is hopeful that with the full backing of the entities named herein, the School Board at Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) will acquiesce to meet with BOSA so that in the same way that Bob Marley Foundation has succeeded in getting cabinet approval for Hon.Robert “Bob” Nester Marley alma mater to be named after him, Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) will also get Cabinet approval to rename James Richards alma mater, Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) after him.

Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) wishes to report that this subject matter was discussed at the meeting that was held in the main auditorium at Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) between the School Board Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) and the Association on December 4, 2013. The Chairman of the School Board Rev. Phyllis Smith-Seymour – a Moravian and member of the decision making body in the Moravian Church pertaining to educational matters – informed the meeting that notwithstanding consensus reached by stakeholders in Beersheba School Community that the school should be renamed; the decision of the Moravian Church in Jamaica which she will communicate to the Association in writing is that the name of the school will not be changed despite philanthropic contributions
that James “Dick” Richards, Beersheba Primary School Alumnus, Soldier, Self-made Businessman, Philanthropist, Icon, and Legend has made to the school.

The big issue that will have to be resolved by Cabinet or the Courts in the Government of Jamaica is whether or not the Moravian Church as a Protestant Denomination has the inalienable right to ignore the
voice of the majority of stakeholders in Beersheba School Community and in so doing, deny the greatest good to the greatest number.

Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) wishes to report that up to the date and time of Volume 21 of BOSA Newsletter being published, the Association has not received any written response from the Moravian Church in Jamaica as promised by Rev. Phyllis Smith-Seymour, Chairman Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) stating that the name of the school will not be changed despite philanthropic contributions that James “Dick” Richards have made to his alma mater.

Laughter Is Good Medicine For The Soul

BOSA invites its readers to read, smile and have a good laugh at the contents of the following articles:

GOLDEN THOUGHTS AND NUGGETS
“The world is often referred to as a cruel field where only the fittest survive but in the final analysis, the survivors will be those who have usefully given service to their fellowmen.”

Ira P. Philip, parliamentary Reporter in Bermuda 1948-1962, Broadcaster, First managing Editor of THE BERMUDA RECORDER (1925), AUTHOR OF THE BOOK: FREEDOM FIGHTERS FROM MONK TO MONUMBO (1987)

“Truth crushed to the earth shall rise again!”

Charles Vinton Monk, unfrocked black clergyman in the AME Church Philadelphia, USA, after he was led away from Court to serve four months and six months consecutive sentence handed down by Judge Leopold Glass and Judge C. V. Gordon, Jr. at the end of his libelous trial in 1928 against Bishop William Hood of the same church. Before his conviction and sentencing, through THE NEW ERA that he owned, managed and edited and from the pulpit, Rev. C. V. Monk became the champion of the grassroots clergymen of the church who felt that they were being held down but they were too timid to speak out against what Rev. Monk called “the parasitical Presiding Eldership method of administering the denomination, which sometimes amounted to blackmail aided and abetted by a criminally careless and inefficient Episcopal superintendency.” The remark that Monk made after he was sentenced to prison, was ultimately proven correct and vindicated him when the issues he championed and campaigned against became so incensed, that at a historic session of the General Conference of the AME Church that was called in 1946, one thousand (1,000) delegates attending a meeting at Little Rock, Arkansas, unfrocked two Bishops and suspended a third of them after finding them guilty of the things Monk had written about in THE NEW ERA NEWSPAPER

“While we can’t always control the things of life that impact on our day, we have a choice. We can continue to brood over the mess we often encounter, or we can change our perspective.”

CENTER FOR DISEASE CONTROL (CDC) FINDS NEW VIRUS

The Center for Disease Control (CDC), USA, says it has discovered a new virus after it killed a man in Kansas. The virus called the Bourbon Virus which is named after the county where the man lived is believed by Scientists that it is spread by a tick or an insect bite.

When the man fell ill last year, he was affected by flu-like symptom but doctors could not figure out what was making him sick. The man, who was under the age of 50, was bitten by numerous ticks while he was working on his property in eastern Kansas. He died eleven days later.

Doctors tested the man’s blood for several possible infections but they came up short. However, when the man’s blood samples were sent to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), it took months of testing before the CDC realized that it was dealing with something new.

Medical Researchers at CDC said: “it was very frustrating and is one of the biggest problems with our jobs that we love, in that we cannot answer certain kinds of questions and we cannot help patients or their families understand and cope with the strange phenomenon that they are experiencing.” These researchers believe that it is possible that other people may have been infected before by tick bite before but never as severe as the manner in which the man who died was infected.

NBC News reports that Scientists plan to visit the area in Kansas where the man who died was bitten by ticks when the weather gets warmer to look for insects and maybe even animals that might carry the virus. Health Officials at CDC recommend that people should use insect repellents and wear long sleeved shirts and pants to protect themselves against tick bites.

SUDDEN CARDIAC DEATH…………ARE YOU AT RISK?

Sudden cardiac death is defined as unexpected mortality from diseases of the heart that occurs after symptoms are experienced (usually within 60 minutes). This can occur in patients without heart disease and is often devastating due to the sudden and unexpected nature especially in the young, fit and seemingly healthy individual. However, sudden cardiac death is commonly seen in people with narrowing of the blood vessels that supply the heart by atherosclerotic (fatty) plaques, a condition termed coronary artery disease.

Approximately eight million worldwide die from sudden cardiac death annually.

Don’t ignore warning signs
Certain factors are warning signs that may be ignored by the individual or ascribed to less important conditions. These include the heart beating fast (palpitation), chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, excessive tiredness, and dizziness at rest or with exertion.

While healthy individuals with no warning signs can suffer sudden cardiac death, risk factors include chronic illnesses such as diabetes mellitus also called “sugar”, high blood pressure, smoking, family history of early coronary artery disease, obesity, high cholesterol, excessive alcohol intake, and lack of physical activity. These factors are related to the narrowing of the blood vessels supplying the heart, resulting in heart attacks and heart disease from reduced blood flow (ischemic) heart disease).

Other risk factors are patients with enlarged heart, diseases of the valves, abdominal structures, previous heart attacks and abdominal rhythms.

Physical activity and sudden cardiac arrest
Physical activity that causes increase in heart rate and blood pressure such as running, climbing, swimming and cycling may uncover and precipitate conditions that result in sudden cardiac death.

Diagnosing condition
Diagnosing and predicting sudden cardiac death can be difficult. Abnormally elevated heart enzymes, thyroid hormones and electrolytes, use of certain prescription drugs and substances such as cocaine, may be predictive. Studies that may predict the risk of sudden cardiac death include chest X-ray, electrocardiogram (ECG), electrophysiological testing (testing the electrical activity of the heart), echocardiogram and coronary angiogram outlining the blood vessels of the heart.

Sudden cardiac death events may present with cardiac arrest where the individual is unresponsive, not breathing and has no pulse. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is then indicated and can even be performed by lay persons with minimal training. An automated defibrillator increases the chance of survival. After resuscitation care using drugs, reversing causes, and sometimes surgery, implanting pacemakers and ablating abnormal pathways in the heart are also important as repeat arrest may occur soon after the initial event.

Prevention
Preventing sudden cardiac death can sometimes be difficult and may still occur after consulting the physician and getting a clean bill of health. However, regular routine check-ups, eating a balanced diet, avoiding smoking, illicit drugs and excessive alcohol while controlling weight, high blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar are some measures that can reduce the risk.

BOSA DEVOTIONAL

The Strength of Weakness
The Apostle Paul found a wonderful feeling and life-altering approach to accessing the miraculous power of Christ in his life. It begins in the Apostle’s letter to the Corinthian Church.

“And He has said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in meekness. Most gladly, therefore, I will boast about my weakness, that the power of Christ may dwell in me. Therefore, I am well content with weakness, with insults, with distress, with persecutions, with difficulties, for Christ’s sake, for when I am weak, then I am strong.” (2 Corinthians 12:9-10, NASB).

Notice the Apostle Paul doesn’t just say “content” with weakness as in “I’ll endure them since I can’t do anything about them anyway; but, well content. How could the Apostle Paul or anyone be well content with weakness? Furthermore, how could the Apostle Paul claim “when I am weak, then I am strong?” Weakness and strength are opposites. It’s like saying, “When I’m hot, then I’m happy, then I’m sad.”

What if the path to true power, the resurrection power of Christ in our lives, doesn’t come through trying harder, but giving up the attempt to be powerful?

What if God’s power could be demonstrated through your life in a way you never thought possible, not by trying desperately to overcome your weakness, or trying harder than you ever have before, but by admitting them and seeking to get out of God’s way so He could demonstrate His power through those very weaknesses.
What if your weakness was the very vehicle through which God has always wanted to reveal His power?

That’s exactly what the Bible teaches us over and over again. It explores why God didn’t remove Paul’s weakness, and why He may not remove ours. As strange as it sounds, embracing our weakness is the Christian way of life.

Our world tells us: “Embrace your strengths, overcome your weakness.” It is only in scripture that we are encouraged to embrace our weaknesses and through them experience a power that we could never know otherwise. This power is not our own, but the power of the man Christ Jesus.

The Apostle Paul wanted the Corinthian Believers to experience the power of God (dunamis) so that they would be satisfied with nothing less.
