Black River Day, August 2, 2013, Emancipation Day An Astounding Success – Vincent Samuels

Amidst the sounds of Genesis Steel Band playing under a white roof gazebo tent on North Street, a float parade led by a marching band on High Street, and Fyffes Pen John Cunno Band playing in the mini park in front of a sea of multi-coloured Gazebo Tents under which Vendors peddled jerk chicken, jerk perk, indigenous Jamaican cuisine, and showcased merchandize from their businesses, The Town of Black River that was officially twinned with The City of Hamilton, Bermuda on June 12, 2013, was transformed into a gorgeous mosaic with people of all nationality adorned in apparels made from the national colours of black, green, and gold.

With the historic Saint John’s Parish Church in the foreground, and the azure waters of the Caribbean sea with Parottee and Long Acre Points creating the only land locked harbor in Jamaica as the backdrop for the main stage where a popular disco played a genre of Jamaican Festival songs, Mento songs by Stanley Beckford and The Turbines, Gregory “Cool Ruler” Isaacs, and many other Artistes, the Official Launch of Black River Day – brain child of His Worship The Mayor of Black River and Chairman Saint Elizabeth Parish Council Councillor Everton Fisher – took place at 4:00 PM.

In a programme that was chaired by Carla Morris, Communications and Outreach Manager, Saint Elizabeth Parish Council, The Very Rev. Father Peter D. Clarke, J.P., did the invocation. This was followed by greetings from Hon. Hugo Buchanan, Member of Parliament, SW Saint Elizabeth, Councillor Derrick Sangster, representing Dr. Christopher Tofton, Opposition Senator and JLP MP Caretaker, SW Saint Elizabeth. After George “GT” Taylor, President Black River Chamber of Commerce gave an overview of Black River Day; Mayor Everton Fisher officially launched Black River Day, August 2, 2013 that will be held annually on Emancipation Day, August 2.

In commending RBC Bank Jamaica Limited, The Bank of Nova Scotia Jamaica Limited, Courts Jamaica Limited, Saint Elizabeth Credit Union Limited, LIME Jamaica Limited, IRIE FM Radio, and several other businesses that sponsored the event, Mayor Everton Fisher announced to much delight and applause from the audience that formed the gorgeous mosaic that Black River Day 2014 will be one of the events – including cultural activities that will be held at Carr Gate, New Market, Saint Elizabeth portraying Heritage Tourism of which James “Dick” Richards (1872-1965), a native of Carr District, Beersheba Primary School Alumnus, self-made Bermudian businessman, soldier, philanthropist, icon and legend is the genesis – that The Right Worship Graeme P. Outerbridge, J.P., Mayor of Hamilton and Chairman of the Corporation Council of the City of Hamilton, Bermuda will attend and participate during his visit to the Town of Black River in 2014.

Activities of Black River Day that went on until the wee hours of Saturday morning August 3, 2013, had as its crescendo, a live broadcast on IRIE FM Radio of “In The Dance hall” Street Dance with George “GT’ Taylor at 10:00 PM.
