PROGRESS REPORT ON SHANISA JONES, TANHOI GUTHRIE, NICKAYLA STEVENS, AND DAMANIKE SMITH

Shanisa Jones, grade 11 student, at Saint Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) has done it again by coming first in her class of 42 students!! Shanisa will graduate with excellent academic performance at the end of 2013/2014 school year. She will proceed to sixth form at the same school in 2014/2015 school year.

The “tyrannical oligarchy ruled” Administration at Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) [the new Trustee for James Richards Educational Trust Fund ] that has victimized and denied Shanisa benefits for which she qualifies as a beneficiary of James Richards Educational Trust Fund was no impediment to prevent Shanisa from shooting for the stars. Beersheba Primary School Alumni in Jamaica and the Diaspora congratulate Shanisa for her excellent performance in consistently maintaining 83.5 average.  Keep On Keeping On Shanisa!! Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) will always be the safety net that it has always been to you since you were admitted to Saint Elizabeth Technical High School as a grade 7 student in September 2009.

Tanhoi Guthrie, grade 10 student, Nickayla Stephens, grade 9 student, and Damanike Smith, grade 9 student who currently attend Hampton School and Saint Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS) Malvern and Santa Cruz, Saint Elizabeth, Jamaica, West Indies respectively, continue to maintain satisfactory academic performance.

NEED FOR GSAT STUDENTS GRADUATING BEERSHEBA PRIMARY SCHOOL TO BE COMPUTER LITERATE

Against the backdrop of information given on page 2 of 10 Volume 15 October 2013 under the above heading, and in light of recent announcements made by the Ministry of Education with respect to the introduction and provision of Computer Tablets to each student at the Primary Level, Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) met with the School Board at Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) on December 4, 2013 to discuss the way forward regarding this matter.

Decision taken at this meeting at which four (4) additional items that were used as terms of reference for this meeting, is that the Administration at Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) will take appropriate action to contact Stephen Curran, Network Design Director at Digicel Group, Kingston, Jamaica West Indies regarding  his interest that he has indicated to Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) to provide Wireless Broadband Internet Service to the school notwithstanding the fact that his knowledge of the terrain in the area could be challenging to provide service to the school.

Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) has not received any information from the School Board at Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) with respect to the outcome of the contact that the Board is expected to make with Stephen Curran, Network Design Director at Digicel Group.

ERECTION OF UNPAINTED PLY-BOARD PARTITION IN THE MAIN AUDITORIUM AT BEERSHEBA PRIMARY SCHOOL
In the pursuance of comments listed on page 9 of 14 of Volume 7 of BOSA Newsletter regarding the above subject matter, Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) wishes to report that as a result of pussy-footing by Ministry of Education Technocrats Errol Golding, Director of Technical Services, Courtney Hamilton, Regional Building Officer, Bertram Brooks, Area Building Supervisor, and Collin Blair, Director of Communications, the issue remains unresolved and inimical to all Stakeholders in the Beersheba Primary School Community. notwithstanding the assurance given by the Board of Governors Beersheba Primary School which met at a meeting that was chaired by Mrs. Nadine Leachman, Regional Director, Region 5, Ministry of Education that the Board would handle and resolve the matter, Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) wishes to report that this outstanding matter remains unresolved.

BI-MONTHLY MEETINGS OF BOSA
Arising from two occurrences when Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) was unable to gain access to the main auditorium at Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) – although the Association sought written permission from Mrs. Tatlin Smith-Williams and Rev. In accordance with the unanimous decision that was taken at the meeting that was held on November 13, 2013, written permission has been sought from The Salvation Army Carr Corp to hold bi-monthly general meetings of the Association in the church hall effective Friday, January 10, 2014 commencing at 4:00 p.m.

RESOLUTION TO RENAME BEERSHEBA PRIMARY SCHOOL JAMES RICHARDS PRIMARY SCHOOL
As a result of the above subject matter being thoroughly discussed with the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education in a meeting that was held at the Ministry’s Head Office in Kingston, Jamaica west Indies on March 13, 2013, and the matter being given full support by the Saint Elizabeth Parish Council, Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) is hopeful that with the full backing of the entities named herein, the School Board at Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) will acquiesce to meet with BOSA so that in the same way that Bob Marley Foundation has succeeded in getting cabinet approval for Hon. Robert “Bob” Nester Marley alma mater to be named after him, Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) will also get Cabinet approval to rename James Richards alma mater, Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) after him.

Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) wishes to report that this subject matter was discussed at the meeting that was held in the main auditorium at Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) between the School Board Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) and the Association on December 4, 2013. The Chairman of the School Board Rev. Phyllis Smith-Seymour – a Moravian and member of the decision making body in the Moravian Church pertaining to educational matters – informed the meeting
that notwithstanding consensus reached by stakeholders in Beersheba School Community that the school should be renamed, the decision of the Moravian Church in Jamaica which she will communicate to the Association in writing is that the name of the school will not be changed despite philanthropic contributions that James “Dick” Richards, Beersheba Primary School Alumnus, Soldier, Self-made Businessman, Philanthropist, Icon, and Legend has made to the school.

The big issue that will have to be resolved by Cabinet or the Courts in the Government of Jamaica is whether or not the Moravian Church as a Protestant Denomination has the inalienable right to ignore the voice of the majority of stakeholders in Beersheba School Community and in so doing, deny the greatest good to the greatest number.

Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) wishes to report that up to the date and time of Volume 17 of BOSA Newsletter being published, the Association has not received any written response from the Moravian Church in Jamaica as promised by Rev. Phyllis Smith-Seymour, Chairman Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) stating that the name of the school will not be changed despite philanthropic contributions that James “Dick” Richards have made to his alma mater.

GOLDEN THOUGHTS AND NUGGETS THAT ARE WORTHWHILE PONDERING

In 1993 when Bernhard Langer won the masters Golf Tournament, as he stepped off the 18th green to receive the green jacket – one of golf’s most coveted prizes – a reporter said to him “this must be the greatest day of your life!” Unhesitatingly Langer replied ‘It’s wonderful to win the greatest tournament in the world but it means more to win on Easter Sunday, to celebrate the resurrection of my Lord and Saviour.”

It’s easy to look for ways to draw attention to our own accomplishment. However, although Langer had the opportunity to boast about himself, instead he turned the spotlight on Jesus Christ. Undoubtedly, Langer might have been aware of what John the beloved disciple said about his lord and Saviour: “He must increase but I must decrease.”

A man with an argument is no match for a man with experience

“When I want something, I always work to get it.”

–    Deon Hemmings-MCCarty, First Caribbean Olympic Gold Medalist (1996) being interviewed by Ian Boyne on Profile, TVJ on Sunday, May 18, 2014.

“See and blind hear and deaf is going to be the death of the Jamaican Society.”

BEERSHEBA OLD STUDENTS ASSOCIATION (BOSA) HOME-COMING AND STUDENTS REUNION

MAYOR OF THE CITY OF HAMILTON, BERMUDA TO VISIT JAMAICA IN 2014
In the pursuance of information that Beersheba Old Students Association (BOSA) provided tom its readers on page 8 of 10 and 9 of 10 under the above heading in Volume 15 of its newsletter, October 2013, as well as on page 7 of 11 in Volume 16 of its newsletter January 2014, the Association wishes to provide its readers with the following update that came out of meetings of the Saint Elizabeth-Bermuda Engagement Committee appointed by His Worship the Mayor of Black River and Chairman saint Elizabeth Parish Council Councillor Everton Fisher that was held at the Mayor’s Parlour on February 17, 2014:

Persons present at the meeting that was presided over by Mayor Fisher were: Rev. Phyllis Smith-Seymour, Chairman School Board Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased), Shawn

Taylor, Director of Planning, Saint Elizabeth Parish Council, Yvonne Comrie, Community Activist, Anthony Tatham, present owner of “Del Cottage” property, Carr District on which James “Dick” Richards built a house for his brother “Doxie “ Gayle and his wife “Sister Gally” and a rain water tank to provide water to his brother’s household and people in the impoverished, poverty stricken, peasant farming community, Vincent Samuels, Secretary/Treasurer, Beersheba Old Students Association, and Kenneth Mullings, Superintendent Roads and Works, Saint Elizabeth Parish Council.

Prior to the Mayor of Hamilton, Bermuda participating in BLACK RIVER DAY that will be held on August 1, 2014, the Mayor will on July 31, 2014, visit Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased), Carr District – birthplace of James “Dick” Richards, and “Del Cottage” where he will unveil Story Boards in commemoration of James “Dick” Richards – “Bermuda King” The Mayor of Hamilton, Bermuda will attend the Cultural Extravaganza that will be held at Carr Gate, New savannah.

    The Cultural Extravaganza at Carr Gate will feature cultural items from students at Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased), John Cuno, Quadrille Dance, and May Pole Dancing, and stalls in which items produced in Cottage Industries in the Community will be displayed.

    The Cultural Extravaganza will also feature indigenous Jamaican Cuisine that will be on sale by Sheryl’s Bar and Grill, South Coast Rest Stop Restaurant, and other vendors in the community.

    In view of non-cooperation and unwillingness of the current owner of the property in Carr District where James “Dick” Richards was born, the Story board that will be unveiled by the Mayor of Hamilton, Bermuda, will be mounted at the entrance to Carr District on land on the right hand side embankment of National Works Agency Bye Pass Road that interacts with Beersheba/Flint Valley Parochial Road. The unwillingness of the family at Carr District, who own the land where James “Dick” Richards was born, is tantamount to the manner in which the Inn-Keeper in Bethlehem treated Jesus Christ, Saviour of the world. Mary who was in labour with the Christ Child was turned away by the Inn-Keeper saying there is no room in the inn.

    All Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) Alumni, Honorary BOSA Members, Friends, and Well-wishers in Jamaica and the Diaspora and stakeholders in Beersheba Primary School (Government Leased) Community are all invited to attend and participate in events announced herein so as to ensure that they identify themselves with the rich legacy and heritage that James “Dick” Richards who rose from being an impoverished , poverty stricken native of the peasant farming Carr District to become one of the wealthiest black man in Bermuda has left his beloved community of Carr District.

Editor’s Note: As a result of clandestine grumblings and murmurings coming from certain individuals and religious groups in New Market Community who have voiced their objections to the Cultural Extravaganza being held at Carr gate, New Savannah, New Market, Saint Elizabeth, the matter will be revisited and discussed at a meeting of the Saint Elizabeth-Bermuda Engagement Committee convened by the mayor of Black River and which he will chair in the Mayor’s Parlour, Saint Elizabeth Parish Council, Black River, Saint Elizabeth on Wednesday, June 18, 2014 commencing at 1:00PM.

The outcome of the deliberation will be promulgated in Volume 19 of BOSA Newsletter as well as on BOSA website: bosaonline.org

BRAIN TEASERS

    Can you add a number to 100 to make it less?
    Can you give me the name of something that the more you cut it the bigger it gets?

Editor’s Note: Readers are asked to submit their answers to the above two Brain Teasers to the Editor of this newsletter and they will be published in Volume 19 of BOSA Newsletter.

ARE YOU AN OLDER JAMAICAN?

As a Jamaican, you know you are getting older if:

    You had an exercise book with Queen Elizabeth and her husband – the Duke of Edinburg – on the cover instead of one with a ring binder.
    You used to listen to Redifussion
    You wore bata crepe and “God Blind” laced up rubber boots to school and bought “Asham” at the school gate. (Extra credit if you know what “Asham” was made of.
    You remember that Lou and Ranny Show used to come on radio at 7:00PM on a Sunday.
    You know what the initials T.A.D.P stand for. (Here’s a clue, the programme was hosted on JBC Radio by either Adrian Robinson or Aggrey Brown)
    You know who Tony Verity was.
    You know who Howard Clarke and Part Line were.
    You can name more than two of the characters in a Jonkanoo Band,
    You know what boxing title Bunny Grant held.
    You didn’t buy gigs, yo yo’s, kites or slingshot (catapult) in a store, you made them yourself.

    You know what Fanta and NuGrape are.
    You know what a Woolsley, Humber, and Zephyr are.
    You got washout and worm medicine at the end of summer holidays.
    Your school graduation was called ‘prize-giving’.
    You still call Norman Manley Airport ‘Palisadoes Airport.’
    You still have a BOAC bag hidden somewhere in a closet.
    You remember when people used to go to the airport and come back with a twang.

    You still want to go to the airport just to stand on the waving gallery.
    When you hear classical music on the radio you still ask, ‘is who dead now?’
    You still refer to any smooth stretch of road as ‘Barber Greene.’
    You still use words like ‘bine’ and ‘clyde’ and don’t know the difference between both.

If you can still relate to all of the above, then you probably have Limacol and Bay Rum – maybe even a bottle of Ferrol – on your nightstand and very possible a chimmey under your bed.

THE BENEFITS OF BREADFRUIT AND THE REASON THAT WE ARE TO EAT MORE OF IT

Breadfruit is unlike any other fruit you’ve eaten before. That’s because breadfruit does not have the look, feel or consistency of a typical fruit, but like the name suggests, looks much like bread. When the breadfruit is ripe, it is relatively soft and the inside has a yellow, cream coloured fragrant smell.

Breadfruit is native to the Malayan Peninsular and Western Pacific Islands. However, it has also been widely grown in tropical regions across the world. Breadfruit is a staple fought that is sought after because it is inexpensive and it is good source of high energy. In fact, breadfruit was first brought to the Caribbean and the Americas by Captain Bligh in the late 18th century as a cheap high energy food source to feed and energize slaves in the new world.

Breadfruit has the health benefit of providing high energy to those who eat it through its carbohydrates that the body needs for warmth and maintenance during daily activities. Not only is breadfruit a rich source of energy, breadfruit also contains significantly high amounts of fiber. According to the American Heart Association, fiber decreases bad cholesterol (LDL) and triglycerides which increases heart attack risks An increased intake of fiber lowers bad cholesterol  levels (LDL) in the body while elevating good cholesterol levels (HDL) in the body. Breadfruit protects the body against heart disease and heart attacks.

Additionally, the fiber found in breadfruit can help those with diabetes to control the disease. Research has shown that fiber can control diabetes by reducing the absorption of glucose from the food we eat. Another health benefit of breadfruit is that it helps to make our intestines and bowels work properly. Fiber regulates bowel movements and clears out the buildup of junk from our intestines. Eating breadfruit on a regular basis can reduce the risk of developing colon cancer.

Breadfruit benefits the body as it contains favourable amounts of Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids help the body and mind to develop normally. Fatty acids also stimulate skin and hair growth, regulate our metabolism, promote reproduction and stimulate bone health. In addition, to the foregoing health benefits, breadfruit also contains Vitamin C, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, iron, and phosphorus.

Further research is being done to uncover even more health benefits of breadfruit. However, in the interim, you can start eating breadfruit and take advantage of the many health benefits we now know it has.

AN INNOVATIVE WAY TO SEND VOICE MAIL

A Jamaican man of unsound mind was seen speaking into an empty envelope. When the man was asked, “what are you doing?” The man of unsound man replied: “You a idiot? You nuh si say me a sen a voice mail!!”

THE WAY OF MAN

The morning comes
And so does the night;
The darkness comes
And so does the light;
The flowers bloom
And hastily fade;
The days of men flourish
And ends in the grave.

The day brings us near
Our hope lingers on;
The night brings us fear

For both weak and strong;
Where can we rest?
From this journey so long?
There is no one more blessed
Who rests in God’s Son
